England to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The English squad will embark on their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they achieve the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an Three Lions game since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to welcome the England side for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.

The team are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Competition Launch and Protest

The championship was launched at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were barracked as they approached the venue by about 50 activists, who urged Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were raised with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Schedule

The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve the Dragons if they make it.

Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will attract households and help reach a broader range of viewers.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.

Each host nation’s squad will participate in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that miss out on the finals through that route.

Locations and Playoffs

The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.

The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.

Official Statement

“The event will be a championship for the fans and a festival of everything we value about the football – its passion and power to bring people together.”

Over 3 million passes, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be offered to fans.
