Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.
A new term came to light a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems completely different.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed harmony has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
