Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Among Rock Generations

It has been two decades since the legendary game first launched in North America, giving everyday gamers the means to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who's nailed Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break in front of a packed crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues moving along the display synchronized to a song. Each riff mimicked specific notes, producing the feel of a genuine live show.

The studio previously tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar series that had a significant impact for many musicians included, showcasing classic bands to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the early financial challenges of licensing the songs – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music since the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. But once the game took off, album purchases and radio play increased, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the music they adored. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Northern Irish group the Answer included Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game revived classic rock back into vogue: “The game offered a larger, younger audience. Generally such music was considered outdated material, but then once it got featured on the game and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised the genre, and got rid of the outdated tag. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still not available in the US, meaning the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on US tour supporting the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song on the tour bus, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Music's biggest acts soon took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in dedicated game editions centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the group more money compared to their records. It sold more than half a million units upon release, and sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase significantly during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar mechanics and extensive customisation options. This track is difficult enough on expert mode, not to mention performed at increased tempo and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated requiring nine months of practice.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up actual weapons and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band had already completed a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I recall our distributors informing us that we were records were moving rapidly,” he says. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I felt differently, but now I accept it,” he admits. “Should you just listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has a unique path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to enable everyone to do it”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus on peripherals waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles such as the fan project and newer releases have maintained the community active, with expectations of something from the founders in development. A new studio has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought such titles might become similar to sports games where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. There’s no reason for it to continue with new generations.”
