Italy and Canada have raised concerns regarding the handling of their citizens who were beaten and robbed by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Details of the Violent Incident

Three Italians and a Canadian were attacked early on Sunday morning in the community of Ein al-Duyuk, near the city of Jericho. They had volunteered to help shield Palestinian residents from escalating violence by settlers.

“In the early morning of November 30th, 10 masked settlers, two carrying army-issued rifles, burst into the home where we were sleeping after night-watch,” said the Canadian national.

All four were hospitalised and one, an male Italian volunteer, was continuing to undergo treatment in Ramallah on Monday for more substantial injuries.

Escalating Violence in the Village

The pace and intensity of attacks in Ein al-Duyuk have increased substantially over the past two months. This coincides with the creation of an unauthorized settler encampment nearby and the arrival of young and aggressive settlers.

Local observers report that violent incidents have become an almost daily occurrence. These incidents have involved groups of settlers forcibly entering houses, beating villagers, and taking sheep, vehicles, and destroying solar panels.

Legal Status and Official Responses

While all settlements on occupied territory are illegal under international law, unauthorized outposts are also against Israeli domestic statutes. Ein al-Duyuk is in Area A of the West Bank, a zone meant to be administered of the Palestinian governing body.

The Canadian foreign ministry stated it “strongly condemns the acts of violence committed by radical settlers and opposes any actions or talk about annexation of the Palestinian territories.”

The Italian foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, told reporters: “We cannot tolerate of this aggression. This is not the way for the settlers to make their claims.”

Lack of Intervention and Wider Situation

Villagers and activists report there has been little effective action by security forces to halt the assaults or dismantle the outpost. Senior figures of the Israeli governing coalition actively support settlements in the territory.

According to UN figures that Israeli settlers and security forces have taken the lives of over a thousand Palestinians, including 233 children, in the West Bank over the last 24 months.

Voice of the Volunteers

The injured Canadian noted that, notwithstanding the violence, she felt the international presence in the village had been meaningful.

“The villagers stood taller while we were present,” she said. “Kids were able to play outside. People slept through the night. That alone made our presence justified.”

A local organizer involved with groups that recruit foreign volunteers said the new outpost has brought in far-right wing settlers who appear to be part of a coordinated network.
