Los Angeles Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Just One Week After Severe Winter Storm.
Following a week of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, Los Angeles is now seeing unseasonably warm weather for this time of year.
Record-Setting Readings
On Friday midday, the thermometer climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown Los Angeles, according to weather officials. This easily surpasses the old record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were noted on NWS graphics for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Forecasters stated that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance featured:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving children or pets unattended in a car.
An Extreme Weather Swing
This sudden spike in heat arrives just after a intense storm system that struck the region last week. That system brought high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, triggering evacuation orders for many residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also caused a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead a cooldown is coming. Readings were forecast to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by late Friday.
Several cities that reached the 90-degree mark included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to experience the high 80s.
For the weekend, downtown LA can expect weather in the 80s, with cooler weather on tap for the start of March.
