According to a ex- senior officer from the Metropolitan police, police departments are increasingly pressured to disclose the ethnic backgrounds of suspects in response to a rise in extremist conjecture on social media platforms.

Case Study: Knife Attack on Train in a UK County

On Sunday morning, British Transport Police reported the arrest of two individuals after a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in the region. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and another, a 35-year-old British national with Caribbean roots, were initially held. Later, the older suspect was released with no charges, and police stated he had no connection in the incident.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, revised directives were rolled out to tackle the spread of misinformation on social media, which had escalated after the deadly attack of young students in a English town previously.

However, campaigners have raised concerns that this move could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the racial background of suspects and spark further extremist narratives when details are not shared with the public.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who served in the Metropolitan Police, described the need for law enforcement to reveal the ethnicity of suspects in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unintended consequence".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he stated.

He expressed sympathy for his former colleagues in the police, explaining that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose district includes the area where the train halted, called it “unfortunate” but essential for police to quickly disclose the racial identities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, stating that online platforms are leveraged to push agendas, making it vital for police to provide facts to counter speculation.

Far-Right Exploitation

Prior to the police announcement, conservative figures had demanded a quicker action. For instance, Chris Philp pushed for timely release of identity details, while Nigel Farage stated on the platform formerly known as Twitter that the people should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts attempted to exploit the incident. One account named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an unsubstantiated claim that a knife-wielding man had been yelling “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Despite authorities clarified that the suspects were UK citizens, some individuals continued to suggest that information was being withheld. Ben Habib claimed it was “hard to believe” that the attack was not an act of terrorism, contrary to official statements indicating otherwise.

Origin of the Directives

These protocols were created by the UK police leadership body in recognition of “growing public anxiety” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

The initiative came soon after a political party accused authorities of concealing the details and migrant background of individuals charged in a different incident in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a vehicle drove into spectators celebrating Liverpool FC’s winning, local authorities disclosed that the suspect was white and British to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

Police leaders emphasized that decisions on disclosing these details would remain with individual police forces, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Verifying a individual’s migrant background would fall to the Home Office, not law enforcement.
