Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He battled justice and the law prevailed.

Two months subsequent to receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “destroy” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The adjudicated plotter – who has been subject to home confinement in his estate while a series of legal procedures and challenges unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, amidst increasing speculation that he will be sent to a infamous top-security prison.

Historical Comments on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s long public life, the conservative former paratrooper exhibited minimal compassion for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we offer these scoundrels a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, period. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish there, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”

Jail Location Discussion

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an apparent effort to discourage the supreme court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, claimed he expected the elderly politician to be jailed in the following week and a half and feared his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the outcome of a almost deadly knife attack during the last presidential campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he added, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the condition of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells containing four dozen detainees: “It's virtually one meter squared per prisoner.

“We talked to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the terrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers React

He is not the only voice expressing views ahead of the ex-leader's predicted detention.

Writing in a prominent publication, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its history”.

“It is an injustice that eats away the hearts of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Opinion

This could be accurate due to the significant support Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. But his predicted imprisonment has also pleased the feelings of millions other people who believe he ought to be incarcerated for conspiring to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and even plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current leader's allied group, said: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to obtain dignified care – but proper handling behind bars. He can’t continue being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the severe conditions of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the extreme right – which has always asserted that human rights were not for lawbreakers – opted to inspect a prison to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, degrading handling”.

Possible Prison Facilities

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected destination seems to be a close penitentiary for police officers and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are much more adequate than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro had while residing in the stunning presidential palace, around a short distance away.

Based on reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – roughly the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre veranda. “He could be authorized to have a set and even a minibar in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” sources suggested.

Political Comments

The lawmaker condemned the talked-about proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
