TGA's Future Class Initiative Looks Like It's Ended

Beyond celebrating video games in various award categories, The Game Awards in the past highlighted a Future Class. Individuals chosen within the Future Class cohort were designed to embody the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of the games industry, much like how certain yearly lists highlight key figures. However, the Future Class designation is coming to an end, according to program organizers.

Beyond Just Recognition: The Purpose of the Program

Future Class was not just a tribute to prominent personalities in the gaming industry. It also served as a center for professional connections and career advancement. While certain past members expressed gratitude for being part of Future Class, some felt that the program did not do enough for its cohort. Feedback focused on various aspects of the program, ranging from the insufficient support to attend the event to providing no compensation for advising new inductees.

Recent Issues and Initiative Hiatus

Future Class was paused in the current year, when The Game Awards omitted the recognition from its schedule. This omission followed a previous year controversy where some Future Class members supported a open letter urging the event to leverage its influence to express solidarity with a humanitarian situation.

"You gave us the role of ambassadors of a better future — therefore, our obligation to you and all the players around the world obliges us to speak up," the message stated.

The letter further contended that the gaming industry routinely dehumanized specific communities, and urged creators in the field to do better.

Official Announcement and Online Changes

Though this is the second consecutive year that TGA has omitted a Future Class cohort, event organizers had not formally declared its end until now. The absence has been remarked upon, in part, due to the obvious removal of any trace of the program on the the event’s online portal. The key organizer has not yet replied to a request for comment.

TGA 2025 are set for December 11.
