The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
