The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
