Cardiff will welcome the initial fixture of the European Championship, while semi-finals and championship match are planned for London's Wembley Stadium

Nine locations in four participating countries - England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland - will host the 24-team tournament

Matches were originally planned for Northern Ireland, but the proposed Belfast venue was dropped due to financial constraints

UEFA's decision to play the opening match in Cardiff was finalized as the competition was formally announced on midweek

"This marks the initial occasion that '{The Red Wall' - our dedicated supporters - will experience a significant championship on native ground," remarked Welsh football governing body head official Noel Mooney

Different from previous Euros, host nations must secure entry for the future competition, though they would be assured to participate in opening rounds on domestic soil if they qualify directly

The four host nations will each be in distinct preliminary sections, with two positions also reserved for the highest-ranked of those nations who miss out through regular qualification routes

Event Organization

Quarter-finals will be held at the Welsh national venue, Dublin's Aviva Stadium, Scotland's national stadium and London's iconic venue - which was used for key fixtures in 1996 and for the postponed tournament

Etihad Stadium, where the Three Lions would start their journey if they secure immediate qualification, before switching to the national stadium, is part of multiple other venues being employed in England

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Birmingham's ground, Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium and Newcastle's stadium are the remaining locations that will be employed across the complete schedule overall

Economic Impact

The national administration says it is investing £557m to stage the tournament but anticipates a return of £3.2bn due to employment opportunities, local development and overseas tourism

"The European Championship will be the biggest sporting event ever jointly hosted by the host countries and, as a dedicated supporter, I know how much international competitions like this are important," commented UK Prime Minister

With an average stadium capacity of just under sixty thousand, UEFA estimates that increased spectators than ever before will watch games at a major tournament

National Perspectives

English football's head official said: "The magnitude of the championship will have a really positive impact on regions across the nation"

The parallel leader at the Irish football governing body, the association head, continued: "The passionate followers are renowned for their enthusiasm and we look forward to providing them, as well as the numerous visitors who will visit Ireland for the tournament, with the type of euphoric experience that they will never forget"

The leader of the Scottish governing body, the association official, commented: "People discuss about the influence of the sport and the benefit it can create on a consistent basis across the country, far beyond the confines of a pitch"

The preliminary grouping will take place in the Northern Irish capital on 6 December 2026
