UK Sport Chief Details Artificial Intelligence Strategy to Enhance GB Athletes Towards Upcoming Podium Wins.
Great Britain's Games and Paralympic Games squads must adopt artificial intelligence and encourage greater teamwork to sustain their recent high-level performance, according to UK Sport chairman Nick Webborn.
"Our nation has been a highly prosperous nation, and to keep that position or to even go higher, we're going to have to do things in new ways," Webborn remarked.
Webborn stressed the need to "think smarter" and "leverage things like AI appropriately in sport," alongside improving cooperation between different governing organizations.
Utilizing Innovation for Performance
The chairman's plan extends further than podium targets. He pointed to several key areas where AI could provide major advantages:
- Scouting New Talent: Employing data analysis to discover promising competitors.
- Injury Prevention: Predicting and minimizing injury hazards through movement monitoring.
- Remote Classification: Enabling equitable classification for Paralympic sportspeople without extensive journeys.
This comes after a previous announcement that British competitors would be given AI-based safeguards against online abuse.
Analyzing Recent Olympics Results
Although Team GB won 65 medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, equalling their 2012 London haul, their first-place tally of 14 saw them drop to seventh in the overall table.
"We want to continue punching above our weight," said Webborn. "It's those little details, how we convert those silvers into first places."
He also commended the ParalympicsGB squad, which has repeatedly finished second behind China, but observing that international rivals are closing the gap.
Athlete Well-being as a Foundation
In his initial interview since assuming the role, Webborn placed significant importance on competitor care and life after sport.
"Valuing the competitors who come into our elite program... preparing for their later life, so that the abilities they acquire help them become a more well-rounded person... is extremely important to me," Webborn stated.
Webborn suggested that a supportive environment not only fosters better performers but also more resilient individuals for the future.
Upcoming Aspirations and Staging Global Tournaments
For the future, UK Sport is focused on securing world-class events to Britain. Scheduled events feature the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.
The chairman further expressed a long-term "desire" to host the Summer Games again, possibly around 2040.
"It was brilliant in 2012? I'd love for other members of the public to have similar memories too," he reflected.
Webborn proposed that a future bid could be creative, perhaps involving multiple host cities like Liverpool and Manchester working together.
